Professor Katie Watson is a lawyer who clerked in the federal judiciary and practiced public interest law before coming to Northwestern, and an ethicist who completed fellowships in clinical medical ethics (University of Chicago Medical School MacLean Center) and medical humanities (Feinberg School of Medicine). She currently teaches law, ethics, and humanities to medical students and MA students. She has been a member of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee for over a decade, she is on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities (ASBH), and she is the Founding Editor of the medical humanities & bioethics publication Atrium. Professor Watson also has a background in theater. She is an adjunct faculty member at the training center of Chicago's Second City theatre, and in 2002 she created a popular “medical improv” seminar at FSM to improve doctor-patient communication. She is a playwright, and her play about race, truth-telling, and living organ transplant (“A Pound of Flesh”) received staged readings by hospital staff at NMH and at the 2013 national meeting of the American Society of Bioethics & Humanities, and by professional actors in a reading with The Goodman Theater. Watson’s current scholarly interests include work on a book about abortion ethics, a textbook on what she calls “medico-legal literacy,” and further developing the emerging area of medical improv through research and train-the-trainer workshops.
