Call for Proposals

ATRIUM issue 12
Theme: "Bad Girls"

Deadline for proposals:
June 11, 2013

Guest Editor:
Alice Dreger, PhD

The theme for Atrium issue 12 is "Bad Girls." Sometimes bad is good—when Michael Jackson sang “I’m bad” he was bragging. Bad girls can be tough and cool, and the transgressive work of earlier renegades broke boundaries for us all. Sometimes bad is bad—misbehaved children and adolescents; things that are inappropriate, tasteless, immoral, rotten, or failed. And who calls whom a girl? An adult a female child; a clueless patriarch a grown woman; women friends, or gay men, each other? Who are the "bad girls" of medicine, of medical education, of bioethics? Are they agents or subjects? What makes culture see someone as a "bad girl"? What is it that women aren’t supposed to do, and is that a good or bad thing? What's the import of, the opposite of, or the alternative to, "the bad girl"? As always, authors are encouraged to interpret theme broadly and creatively.

This issue will be guest-edited by NU MH&B Professor Alice Dreger, and proposals should be sent directly to her by June 11 at: badgirlsatrium@gmail.com
