Biography

Catherine Belling, PhD is Assistant Professor of Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Born in South Africa, she came to the United States on a Fulbright grant to complete her graduate training in English at Stony Brook University, New York. Her dissertation examines the expression in 17th-century British drama of anxieties about medical theories and therapeutics. While a student, she became a research assistant in the Medicine in Society program at Stony Brook School of Medicine where, on graduation, she joined the faculty of the Preventive Medicine department and became Associate Director of the Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society. In 2007 she joined the MH&B program at Northwestern.

Her current research concerns contemporary fears of disease and of health care, connections between anxiety and interpretation in fiction, medicine, and bioethics, and disciplinary questions surrounding medical humanities as an academic field. She is at work on a monograph considering hypochondria as a cultural, narrative, and hermeneutic response to medical uncertainty. Her work has been published in Literature and Medicine, the Journal of Medical Humanities, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, and Academic Medicine, as well as in several edited collections.

She teaches the Literature and Medicine course in the MH&B Masters Program and will be co-directing the M2 Profession of Medicine unit and the M1 and M2 Medical Humanities Seminars in spring 2008, as well as teaching a seminar on science and the short story.

She serves on the editorial boards of Literature and Medicine, the Journal of Medical Humanities and the Literature, Arts, and Medicine Database. In 2005 she chaired the Modern Language Association's Executive Committee for the Division on Literature and Science, and in 2005-2006, she was Program Co-Chair for the annual meeting of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH). In 2007 she was elected to the ASBH Board of Directors.
